“Bolivian Extension”

Itinerary: La Paz – Uyuni salt flats- Potosi – Sucre – La Paz.

This Bolivian extension showcases the core of Bolivia’s cultural, historical and natural wealth: an ideal way to see the unmissable sights of the country. This extension can ideally be added on to the end of a Peruvian tour!

Price per person from 815 USD.

What’s the plan?

Day 1: LA PAZ
Arrival at La Paz airport, and transfer to the Rosario hotel. Night at the hotel.

If this itinerary is being completed as an extension of a Peruvian tour, you could arrive by bus from Puno or by air from Cusco.

Day 2: LA PAZ: TIWANAKU
In the morning, departure to the Tiwanaku archeological site, which used to serve as a political and spiritual center for a civilization which preceded the Incas. You will visit the Sun Gate, these 1000-year-old enigmatic ruins, the Kalasasaya Temple as well as its museum.
Return to La Paz in the early afternoon.

Free end of afternoon and night at the hotel.

Day 3: LA PAZ - UYUNI
Early-morning departure to the airport to catch a flight to Uyuni, from which a 4×4 vehicle will be waiting for you to take you to the Uyuni salt flats. You will visit the train cemetery, then the Colchani village on the edge of the salt flats, where the salt is still farmed using artisanal methods. Then, the 4×4 will venture out onto the immense expanse of salt in order to reach the “Fish Island”, located at the heart of the salt flats 50 miles away. From the top of this surprising “island”, you will be able to enjoy an extraordinary view over the salt flats and the Tunupa volcano, in the middle of giant cactuses. Time for lunch: you will have your picnic here, and will no doubt enjoy the surprising optical illusions offered by this unique landscape!

Return to Uyuni in the evening. Night at the Tambo Aymara hotel.

Day 4: UYUNI - POTOSI

Morning departure by bus to Potosi (around 4 hours away), a town located at an altitude of 4000 meters, which was once one of the biggest and richest in the world. Free end of afternoon to explore the city at your own pace. Possibility of visiting the “Casa de la Moneda”, founded in 1572 by the vice-king of Spain, Francisco de Toledo, who used to mint coins over several centuries with silver extracted from Cerro Rico. The machines used during colonial and republican times are part of an exhibit at the museum. Night at the Coloso Potosi hotel.

Day 5: POTOSI - SUCRE
In the morning: guided tour of the Cerro Rico mines, a mountain with a wealth of silver which drove the Potosi’s and Spain’s prosperity in the 16th century. The centuries-old silver farming which continues to this day has left an incredible maze of galleries.

You will be able to enter these galleries to see how current-day miners continue to tap this market.

In the afternoon, departure by bus to Sucre (2-3 hours´drive away). After the altitude at Potosi, the softer climate in the valley at 2800 meters’ altitude is a nice change!

Free end of afternoon and night at the Capital Plaza hotel, in the heart of the colonial center.

Day 6: SUCRE
Morning departure to the Recoleta viewpoint, where there are some astonishing panoramic views over the city of Sucre. You will then walk down into the historical center to visit the textile museum where a fascinating exhibit showcases the different styles of Andean textiles, and the weaving techniques from pre-hispanic times to this day. The next visit will be the “Casa de la Libertad”, where the country’s independence was proclaimed and which is now a Bolivian history museum. Free afternoon to enjoy the charm of this pleasant colonial city.

Night at the hotel.

Day 7: SUCRE - LA PAZ
Morning transfer and flight to La Paz. Transfer to the Rosario Hotel. In the afternoon you will take a guided tour of La Paz, a capital city nestled in the most unlikely setting, terraced between altitudes of 3200 and 4000 meters. At the lower end of the city, you will start with the Valley of the Moon, a canyon which boasts the most unusual sights: hundreds of “fairy chimneys” created by the erosion of the friable rock by water. After crossing some more modern and residential neighborhoods, you will then head back up to the historical center, which is home to the presidential palace, the parliament and other colonial buildings. You will also make a stop at the Kilikili viewpoint in order to enjoy the panoramic view across the city, and will finish with a visit of the “witches market”.

Night at the hotel.

Day 8: LA PAZ - RETURN
Transfer to La Paz airport to take your international flight. End of our services.

If your trip is an extension of a Peruvian tour, you can take a bus to Puno or a flight to Cusco.
