“Bolivian Adventure”

Itinerary: Santa Cruz – Park Amboro – Samaipata – Sucre – Potosi – Tupiza – Sud Lipez – Uyuni Salt Flats- La Paz – Coroico – Sajama – Amazon – Tiwanaku – Copacabana – La Paz.

This tour will take you through a great part of Bolivia’s beauty, and some extremely varied environments, from high plateaus to the Amazonian forest, from the Uyuni Salt Flats to the Yungas tropical valleys. This tour combines these unmissable sights with more sporty, off-the-beaten-path excursions.

What’s the plan?

Day 1: SANTA CRUZ
Arrival at Santa Cruz International Airport, and transfer to the « Puerta de Hierro » hotel. Night at the hotel.

If your flight arrives in La Paz rather than Santa Cruz, your tour program can of course be adapted.

Day 2: SANTA CRUZ – AMBORO NATIONAL PARK
Morning departure to Amboro National Park, a natural reserve of over 6000 km2 (1.5 million acres) which is terraced between 300 and 3200 meters’ altitude and boasts an exceptionally varied fauna and flora. You will then check into the “Volcano Refuge”, an eco-lodge hidden at the bottom of a deep valley. In the afternoon you will be able to take a hike in the park. You could equally take a dip in the waterfalls near the lodge.

Day 3: AMBORO NATIONAL PARK
In the morning, departure for a 7-hour hike from which you will have superb views over the ochre rock cliffs, the subtropical forest and the 100m-high waterfalls.

Day 4: AMBORO NATIONAL PARK – SAMAIPATA
Free morning at the lodge. After lunch, departure by private vehicle to the pretty village of Samaipata (“resting at a high altitude”, in Quechua), located at the foot of the Andes, at an altitude of 1650 meters and on the edge of the tropical forest.

Check-in at the “Landhouse” guest house. Night at the hotel.

Day 5: SAMAIPATA – SANTA CRUZ
In the morning, departure to the « El Fuerte » archeological site. You will visit this ancient fortress constructed by the Incas to control the invasion of the Guarani Indians. Return to Samaipata. In the afternoon, you will return by private vehicle to Santa Cruz.

Day 6: SANTA CRUZ – SUCRE
In the morning, airport transfer and flight to Sucre. Arrival and transfer to the Capital Plaza hotel, in the heart of the city. In the afternoon, you will make your way to the Recoleta viewpoint in order to have some stunning panoramic views over the city of Sucre. You will then head back into the historical center to visit the textile museum, where an exhibit shows different types of Andean textiles, and weaving techniques from pre-hispanic times to the present day. You will visit the Casa de la Libertad, where the country’s independence was declared, which has today become a museum about the history of Bolivia.

Day 7: SUCRE
Free day to enjoy the charm of this beautiful colonial city. Night at the hotel.

*if you are in Sucre on a Sunday, you could use this time to visit the village of Tarabuco, one hour and a half away from the city, where an important indigenous market is held.

Day 8: SUCRE – POTOSI
Morning departure to Potosi (3 hours away). Arrival and check-in at the “Coloso Potosi” hotel.

In the afternoon you will visit the Cerro Rico mines, a mountain which boasts an incredible wealth of silver, which was once the glory and prosperity of Potosi and Spain from the 16th century onwards. The silver farming which has been going on for centuries has left an incredible maze of galleries. You will enter these galleries to see for yourself how miners continue to use a rather traditional workmanship to exploit the secondary veins which remain.

Day 9: POTOSI - TUPIZA
In the morning, departure to Tupiza by bus (around a 6-7 hour drive away). Transfer to the Mitru hotel and free end of afternoon in this small town located at an altitude of 2900 meters, which has a distinctly Far-West feel to it.

Day 10: TUPIZA
Morning departure for a 6-hour hike, through the gorges, canyons and other geological curiosities which can be found in the Tupìza mountains such as the “Devil´s Door” or “Los Machos Valley”, the “Inca Canyon” or the “Quebrada de Palala” gorge. Return to Tupiza in the late afternoon.

Day 11: TUPIZA – SAN ANTONIO DE LIPEZ
In the morning, departure on a 4-day expedition in a 4×4 vehicle, through the Sud Lipez region. You will stop by the beautiful Palala Valley on your way to “El Sillar”, in the middle of a magnificent lunar landscape, then you will continue over to the Nazarenito, Chilcobija, Cerrillos, Polulos, and Río San Pablo mining areas, before reaching the abandoned village of San Antonio de Lipez.

Night at a local refuge (basic comfort).

Day 12: SAN ANTONIO DE LIPEZ – LAGUNA COLORADA
In the morning, you will visit the colonial ruins of San Antonio Viejo, El Torréon, Laguna Morejón and Quetena: if you wish, you can also have a dip in the Chalviri medicinal thermal baths. Then, you will continue your journey by 4×4 over to the Polques Lagoon, until you reach Laguna Verde, at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano which sits high at 5960 meters. You will then cross the Dali desert, where you will see its incredible ignimbrite formations along the way.

From there, you will make your way up to an altitude of 5000 meters where you will discover the geysers of the “Morning Sun”, and its volcanic craters with its outpouring of sulfur steam and heavy waters. Arrival at the Laguna Colorada where you will spend the night. Night at the refuge (basic comfort).

Day 13: LAGUNA COLORADA – SAN JUAN
In the morning, you will leave the Laguna Colorada and will cross the Siloli Desert, where you will be able to admire the “Stone Tree”. Following this, you will take the “Jewels’ Path”, formed by the Ramaditas, Honda, Chiarkota, Hedionda and Cañapa lagoons, which is home to thousands of flamingos. You will stop by the foot of the Tomasamil and Ollagüe volcanoes (the latter of which is still active), before visiting the Chiguana salt mines. Arrival in San Juan by the end of the afternoon.

Day 14: SAN JUAN – UYUNI
Morning departure to the Uyuni Salt Flats. You will cross this immense expanse of salt before reaching the Incahuasi island, located at the heart of the Salt Flats. From the top of this surprising “island”, you will have extraordinary views over the Salt Flats and the Tunupa volcano, in the middle of giant cacti. You will have your packed lunch here, and will probably be surprised at the astonishing optical illusions and perspective that this unique landscape offers. At the end of the day, you will visit the Colchani village, on the edge of the Salt Flats, where salt is still extracted using traditional methods.

Arrival in Uyuni and night at the Tambo Aymara hotel.

Day 15: UYUNI - LA PAZ : MOON VALLEY
Morning transfer and flight to La Paz. Transfer to the Rosario hotel. Afternoon visit of La Paz, a capital city lodged in an incredible setting, terraced between altitudes of 4000 and 3200 meters. At the lower end of the city, you will start by visiting the Moon Valley, a canyon where the water’s erosion has created hundreds of “fairy chimneys”, or giant spires.

You will then make your way up to the modern, residential neighborhoods, until you reach the Presidential palace, the parliament and other colonial structures. You will also visit the Kilikili viewpoint, in order to enjoy some panoramic views across the city, and will finish with a visit of the witches’ market.

Day 16: LA PAZ: DEATH ROAD
Morning departure by vehicle to the Cumbre peak (4700 meters), which will be the starting point of your mountain bike ride, along one of the most spectacular roads in Bolivia. Riding along dizzying abysses, you will ride through a variety of different ecological settings, from the rough landscapes of the Andes to the subtropical forest of the Yungas region, at the gates of the Amazon.

Return to La Paz at the end of the day, and night at the hotel.

Day 17: LA PAZ – SAJAMA
Morning departure by private vehicle to the Sajama National Park, located on the border with Chile, which is home to a great llama and alpaca population, at the foot of 3 snowy volcanoes. On the way, you will make a stop to see some “chullpas”, or funeral towers, which is typical for the region. Arrival in Sajama around noon. In the afternoon you will go see the geysers, on foot or by car according to your physical shape.

Return to the village at the end of the day, and night at the hotel. (Basic hotel).

Day 18: SAJAMA - LA PAZ
In the morning, you will get back in the 4×4 to take a tour of the Sajama volcano. You will also be able to spot some vicunas on the way. There is also the option, if you wish, of having a dip in the thermal baths on the way out of the village (admission not included). Return to La Paz at the end of the afternoon.

Day 19: LA PAZ - AMAZON
Airport transfer and flight to Rurrenabaque. Airport pick-up and transfer to the Isla de los Tucanes hotel.

Day 20: AMAZON
In the morning, departure by 4×4 vehicle (around 3 hours) until you reach the village of Santa Rosa del Yacuma. Check-in at the Caracoles lodge, located on the banks of the Yacuma River. In the afternoon, departure down the river for an expedition which will allow you to observe many different animal species: caimans, turtles, capybaras, pink dolphins and different types of monkeys. You will also see many different types of birds, such as parrots, toucans and herons.

Return to the lodge in the late afternoon. Dinner and night at the lodge.

Day 21: AMAZON
Morning departure for a hike in search of the famous anaconda called « sicuri » (which can measure up to 40 feet long, and live for a hundred years). You will also be able to observe a great variety of lizards. In the afternoon you will go fishing for piranhas. If the river flow will allow it, you will also be able to swim in the river with the pink dolphins, which inhabit almost the whole Amazonian basin. After dinner, it’ll be time to take a moonlit boat ride and discover the tropical nightlife.

Day 22: AMAZON
In the morning, you will go back down the river for a yellow monkey or chichilos spotting expedition. After lunch, return by 4×4 to Rurrenabaque where you will arrive in the late afternoon.

Day 23: AMAZON – LA PAZ: TIWANAKU
Morning flight to La Paz and transfer to the Rosario hotel. In the afternoon, departure by private vehicle to the Tiwanaku archeological site, the political and spiritual center of a civilization  which precedes the Incas. Visit of the 1000-year old, enigmatic ruins which make up the Sun Gate, the Kalasasaya temple as well as the site’s museum.

Return to La Paz at the end of the day and night at the hotel.

Day 24: LA PAZ – COPACABANA
Morning departure to Lake Titicaca (around a 3-4 hour bus ride away). After crossing the Tiquina strait, arrival in Copacabana and transfer to the Las Olas hotel. Free afternoon to visit the village and the Basilica, which is home to the Black Virgin, an object of devotion and pilgrimage beyond the Bolivian border. If you have enough time, you could also climb up to the “El Calvario” hill, which overlooks the city and offers superb views over Lake Titicaca.

Day 25: COPACABANA : ISLAND OF THE SUN
In the morning, you will meet your guide and set off by boat to the Island of the Sun, the biggest on Lake Titicaca. You will then trek across the island from North to South, and will have lunch on the island. During this trek, you will also have the chance to discover a variety of small villages, such as In Challapampa (in the north) and In Yumani (in the south), some Inca ruins, before reaching some little deserted coves with unique views over the Lake. Return to Copacabana in the late afternoon.

Day 26: COPACABANA – LA PAZ
After breakfast, free morning in Copacabana. In the early afternoon, departure by bus to La Paz. Arrival in the late afternoon.

Transfer and night at the Rosario hotel.

Day 27: LA PAZ - RETURN
Transfer from La Paz airport to catch your international flight. End of our services.

If your flight leaves from Santa Cruz rather than La Paz, your itinerary can of course be adapted.
