Huaraz: A paradise for mountain lovers

Located 250 miles north of Lima, Huaraz is a small Andean city located at an altitude of 10,000 feet in the Callejón de Huaylas, a valley which separates the Black Range and the White Range. This is therefore the starting point for all the excursions and mountain treks in these 2 mountain ranges, as well as the Huayhuash mountain range further down South.

What to do in Huaraz and its surroundings?
The White Range is without a doubt one of the most beautiful in Peru. It boasts many “nevados”, or eternal snowy peaks including Huascarán, the highest summit in Peru, peaking at 22,000 ft. Many of these summits boasts glaciers and attract mountain-climbers from all over the world. The White Range is also a heaven for lovers of hiking and trekking. It offers treks of 1 to 10 days amongst sumptuous mountain landscapes. The most famous one is the Llanganuco-Santa Cruz trek, which is normally done over 4 days and which stops by none other than the Llanganuco turquoise lagoon. These hikes take place at a medium altitude of almost 13,000 ft. and stops by passes of almost 16,400 ft. We would therefore recommend you be in excellent physical shape in order to complete this trek!

Another favorite stomping ground for the lovers of mountain trekking is the Huayhuash Range. Further away from Huaraz and therefore more difficult to access, it offers some virgin mountain landscapes, which you’ll be able to see during a long 10-day trek.

For those less keen on long hikes, we have one-day excursions which will take you through the magnificent landscapes of the White Range without breaking as much of a sweat. For example, a one-day excursion will allow you to admire the splendid Llanganuco lagoon at the heart of the Huascarán National Park. You will also stop by the Callejón de Huaylas, Caraz, Carhuaz and finally the Yungay cemetery where 25,000 people died when the town was buried under a mudslide in 1970.

A one-day excursion will also take you through the Nevado Pastoruri, at an altitude of 16,000 ft. We also offer a one-day excursion to the Chavin de Huantar archeological site, one of the oldest in Peru, which includes some underground sections.

Finally, the valley of the Huaylas Callejón ends in a narrow and deep canyon called “cañón del pato”, which can be reached from the Caraz village.
