Why travel to Bolivia?
Bolivia is without a doubt the most surprising and disorienting country in South America. With a surface area of double the size of France and barely 11 million inhabitants, Bolivia is all about the great open outdoors. It is the least developed country in the continent, and organised tourism is only just starting out. Whether it be in the Andean plateau or the tropical forest, those who travel around Bolivia travel as adventurers, in a country where the unexpected is always just around the corner.
Here are some of the astonishing things you will come across during your trip to Bolivia:
- A wild nature which offers a variety of enormous, breath-taking virgin landscapes, whether it be the surreal Uyuni Salt Flats, the colored lagoons of the Sud Lipez, the snowy peaks of the White Range, the dizzying cliffs of the Yungas region, or the exuberant forest of the Amazonian plains.
- A mostly indigenous population, which retains it customs and ancestral traditions. The Indian culture has its deepest roots in Bolivia, and it is also there that it has the biggest impact on society, be it socially, economically, culturally and even politically. Culture shock and surprises are therefore guaranteed!
- Historically fascinating sites such as Potosi, the biggest silver deposit in the world which has been exploited since the 16th century by the Spanish, and which had a huge impact on the local economy and Europe’s too, the colonial city of Sucre, a World Heritage Site, and Tiwanaku, home to the forerunner civilization of the Incas.
- A country still preserved from mass tourism but which offers good-quality and up-and-coming tourist infrastructures (roads, hotels, airports) which allows for very comfortable travel around the country. Some destinations however, such as the Sud Lipez, are still very much recommended for lovers of adventure.
